UPDATE!!!

I just got a call from The Committee, and it seems that I placed third in the tournament, so I will receive a prize at the awards ceremony in August.

I actually tied for 3rd with 18 "points" (however those are calculated), so they probably decided to give the prize to the newcomer. I would have.

When we were teenagers Paul and I learned to golf with all sand greens. They were fast. It was the first golf course where we had a family membership. We golfed there an awful lot however we were never able to dig our lunch out of the sand.

Yes, it was planned to be at low tide. The trick was to carry to where the sand was wet and hard. So, say you were on a 140 yard hole. As long as you carried the ball 100 yards passed the soft sand, the ball would hit and roll a good 30 or 40 yards. The roll seemed rather independent of the trajectory. My high 9-irons rolled about as far as Tomás' hybrid clubs with lower trajectories. Our fears of buried lies were completely unfounded. The balls hit hard and rolled far.

The hard part was the "chipping". The best you could do was to putt with a club that wasn't a putter (you couldn't use the putter from off the green). I used my 3-iron. Tomás' hybrids came in handy for chipping.

The water was always at least another 100 yards beyond the "green". Mario sculled a drive and ended up about 50 yards past once (his triple bogey), and his returning shot had a pretty damp lie, but he still wasn't all that close to the crashing waves. So yes, Laredo has a really wide beach!

Laredo has such a wide beach - did the water ever come into play? Were date and time selected so as to play during low tide? Was a 4 iron rolling shot typically a better play than a high 9 iron?
