Yeah, this page is all messed up. It's eating all my CPU as I type this comment. It shows its age when I mention using a beta version of Leopard.

It's funny that you grew up in Rutherfordton, as I hail from Morganton.

I, too, love the original, last.fm 'recently played' widget. I pasted it onto my dog's myspace page a couple years back and decided recently that I wanted it on my personal site. No luck finding it through conventional search methods. This is actually the first 'functional' one i've seen asidethe one on my myspace page.

Anyway, I wrote an article providing the source in the original JavaScript plus a PHP (slight) variation. I offered a few customization options, as well. Thought people who wander here looking for it may be helped. That quilt widget slowed down this page tremendously, btw...might wanna limit it to a certain number of album covers or something?

Here's the article with the source code:

Good question. I'm not sure, but in my googling this morning, I did find these two bits of information:

Last.fm signs content deal with Sony
Last.fm signs deal with Warner Music

It sure seems like they're going about it as legally and respectfully as possible. Not that the record companies deserve much respect.

Have you been following the copyright/legal issues surrounding this? I was under the impression that services like this were under attack from the record companies because they don't sell you music (the 'buying cow/getting milk for free' argument). And I see that Pandora is now shut down outside the U.S. Is Last.FM likely to have problems because of this kind of thing?
