I thought I knew about this practice - the calcium is good for the shell production. Just to be sure, I googled the question and got 1,470,000 responses. There are many, many, many websites devoted to chicken feed. Who knew? One I looked at recommended feeding them eggshells. Sort of cannablistic, I think.

Another interesting thing I learned lately that's kind of on topic. Whenever my in-laws have a paella or something with clams, they save the shells, grind them up, and feed them to their chickens. This apparently makes the shells of the eggs they lay stronger, so the break accidentally less often. Neat, huh?

Indeed, I am familar with the iconic importance. Hard not to be around these parts. The reason for the association is unknown to me. But Wikipedia isn't sure either, so I don't feel too bad.

We visited Santiago de Compostela in Easter 2006, and I had a blog entry about it in my pre-Wordpress blog, but that's been lost. We'd definitely love to go back. That town has a unique charm to it.

The scallop ranks as one of my very favorite foods. I imagine you're aware of the iconic importance of its shell a little to your west? Now you just need to have a romantic weekend getaway in Santiago de Compostela.
