There is a cure to the Canon 40D ERR 99. Just switch to Nikon. I was so frustrated with the 40D ERR 99 that I finally took a switch and I am now happy with my Nikon D300.

I began to experience the dreaded Error 99 tonight after shooting a few pictures of the family in front of our Christmas tree . . . also after using an Optika remote. Amazing coincidence; up to now, I've had no problems with my 40D and grip.
I'd sure be interested in learning what Canon ultimately diagnosed. I have a feeling I'll be on the phone - and on my way to a FedEx office - on Friday. Grrr.

That is seriously teh poo.

You're a strong man to not use this opportunity to try to convince your wife that the fix is a new 5D Mark II. [ emoticon indicating exaggerated slyness, tipping the reader that the author is attempting to distance himself, through humor, from the implications of his comment with respect to the value of candor and trust in a spousal relationship ]

The camera is on its way to New Jersey. Hopefully it'll be back by the time you hit the States in November.

I briefly had an error message the other day. I don't remember whether it was a 99 or not, but it said something about a problem with the automatic sensor cleaning thing it does every time you turn it on. So, of course, I turned it off and on again, and haven't had any problems since.
I kept all my receipts and stuff, and filled out an online warranty form when I got back from buying it. Here's hoping I don't have to use it...
