We have quite a few lamp posts in the small town I live in. A year ago, they all got a fresh paint job of black matte paint and official stickers that always make me chuckle reading roughly, “Affixing stickers is prohibited!” Apparently, when they were painting them, they noticed how many “flat for sale!” papers had been taped to the posts at eye level and they wanted to stop such defacing of public property. Good on ‘em.

Two days ago, I noticed that one of the lamp posts had been vandalized! It’s unclear to me what the intended goal of the vandal(s) was. Personally, I’m quite happy with the bidirectional reflectance distribution function of the town’s lamp posts. This lamp post does, however, reside on the coolest teenage hangout corner in town. The youngfolk spend hours upon hours sitting sulkily on the steps of this bank.

Betsy should comment after Jane more often. Marge looks quite concerned with that hippo overhead.

Driving is a real danger around here with all the sailor hats. At least the authorities do a pretty good job of putting up these signs wherever they see one on the road. And don’t even get me started on the cowboy hats!

Colindres is delightfully graffiti-free (relatively). Marga’s family, who live in Mondragon, always mention that when they visit.

George Catlin painted ominous, swirling clouds of black smoke that loom out of the distance and drive the Indians before them. The artist was an eyewitness to such terrifying events, and described the fire’s “thunder rumbling as it goes.” But he also wrote that prairie fires made for “some of the most beautiful scenes that are to be witnessed in this country, and also some of the most sublime.”

This morning I did the usual, Nora, get up, go to the bathroom and put on your slippers and call me when you’re ready to come downstairs.” It’s a way to practice some autonomy and let Daddy check his email and Facebook notifications. A few minutes went by and I heard nothing. Usually this means she’s just slumped over onto her pillow again. I went up to investigate and found her fully dressed, in weather inappropriate shorts and a summer shirt over her winter undershirt, just putting on the final touches of her ensemble with a sparkly jacket. A+ for initiative!!
