Winter Pond Hop 2009

January 31, 2009 By: erik Category: News

Like last year, I got invited to a Super Bowl party in the US tomorrow, so I’m leaving my 7-month pregnant wife at home alone for a week to go watch some football and play some golf. [insert manly grunts here]

The fact that my wife is actually okay with this is a testament to the health of our marriage. I love you, honey. See you in a week.

Mini Me 2 – The iPhone

Mini Me using iPhone (cropped)Mini Me is, after all, me, so he’s gotta have an internet connection. The problem is he struggles to push the mouse around and dance around the keyboard. Luckily, it turns out that the iPhone’s revolutionary touch interface is really quite usable for little people. As you might imagine, he’s rather fond of this site.

Sunrise Through Forest

Sunrise Through Forest (cropped)The sky was particularly interesting this morning. Just the right amount of clouds for the sun to play off of. As I gazed upwards, ultimately deciding there weren’t any good photos to take and it was too late to start a timelapse movie, I mourned the fact that I have a hill directly to the east which means that everything gets fairly bright before we even see the sun appear over the hill. A few minutes later, I glanced out the window and saw something I’ve never seen before. The trees on top of the hill were perfectly silhouetted by the rising sun. Very cool.

Mini Me 1 – The Confrontation

Mini Me - 01 (crop)Anyone who has ever read The Indian in the Cupboard or The Borrowers has imagined what it would be like to be small enough to fit on someone’s hand, and also what it would be like to have a pocket-sized human friend. I’ve decided to do a couple “Mini Me” images to hone my Photoshop skills and because altering reality in Photoshop is so darn fun.

Tweeting On Hold

Fail WhaleOne of the uses of Twitter, I’ve found, is for complaining when there’s no one around at the moment to hear your complaints. So you broadcast them on Twitter. And one common activity that results in the “bored and angry” mental state necessary for such tweets is being on hold on the telephone. Here are a few recent tweets in this genre from people I follow.

What’s the deal with last names in Spain?

January 28, 2009 By: erik Category: Spain

Surnames in SpainFor outsiders visiting or learning about Spain, the system of surname inheritance in Spain may seem very strange and foreign. Not surprisingly, all non-Spanish systems seem pretty weird to Spaniards. Humans have a tendency to think “We know what we know and we assume that our way of doing things is the best!” That’s one of the most eye-opening things about traveling and learning about other cultures; you learn that the way you and your country have always done things is not the only way. To be a contented expatriate, you have to become very accustomed to saying, “Huh! That’s different! It’s not necessarily better or worse, but different from what I’m used to.Everything has pros and cons. In this post, I will attempt to explain the Spanish system of last names to non-Spaniards.

Budapest Opera

Opera TicketI was moving some books on the bookshelf today and Crime and Punishment leapt off the shelf, fell open, and ejected a piece of paper that must have once been used as a bookmark. Upon closer examination, the paper turned out to be a ticket to the Budapest Operahouse. It has been years since I thought about seeing the opera that chilly November day.

Rosquillas – Spanish Doughnuts

January 27, 2009 By: erik Category: Food, Photos, Recipes, Skepticism, Spain

Rosquillas - Spanish DoughnutsLast weekend, my in-laws came over and Marga and her mother made rosquillas for the first time. Like churros, another Spanish delicacy, rosquillas are basically just fried dough, except this dough contains a little white wine and anisette for flavor. Mmmm….anisette…

Sarah Palin's Career As Measured By Traffic To My Blog

January 26, 2009 By: erik Category: Funny, Internet, Politics, USA, Weird

Sarah Palin's CareerSarah Palin’s career has been full of ups and downs in the past six months. It’s interesting how traffic to my Can Sarah Palin really see Russia from her house? post has ebbed and flowed with Palin’s popularity. The other events that have affected this traffic graph were my blog getting dugg and a link from Bad Astronomy. Check it out:

Laredo Webcam

If you’re ever curious what the weather is (or was) like here, there’s a solution! I recently discovered a very well done 360° webcam in nearby Laredo. You can download 7330×900 high resolution photos from every quarter hour of daylight going back to November 3, 2007. It will also generate timelapse videos, but 15 minutes is too long of an interval to make an interesting timelapse video.
