If you’re ever curious what the weather is (or was) like here, there’s a solution! I recently discovered a very well done 360° webcam in nearby Laredo. You can download 7330×900 high resolution photos from every quarter hour of daylight going back to November 3, 2007. It will also generate timelapse videos, but 15 minutes is too long of an interval to make an interesting timelapse video.
It’s not just nice to see the weather, it’s also perfectly positioned to show the local topography, clearly showing the point of Laredo beach reaching towards Mount Buciero, with the town of Santoña to the left of the base of Mount Buciero. Here, have a Google Map:
Where do I live?
Most of Colindres is obscured by a small patch of forest. As the camera is spinning around, just to the right of the antenna, you’ll see a forest and Pico Candiano (where the photo in my blog header was taken) behind it. Colindres, and my house, is somewhere in the middle.
I took advantage of the crystal clear blue skies today to take some panorama shots of Laredo. I kind of surprised myself by finding such a great vantage point. Absolutely gorgeous! This wider one has notes on it if you click through to Flickr. I did this for a ‘ploob blog entry. I’m pretty happy [...]
On Sunday, my parents and Marga’s parents went to Laredo to see the sights. On the way to Laredo, we stopped to buy the daily bread. Erik lets Marce struggle to reach the top bread basket. The wine section of the local supermarket. The pescaderia. The first place we went in Laredo was to the [...]
Today, Marga’s parents, Marga, and I walked the entire length Laredo’s beach. In the morning, we walked from where we usually park to the very tip of the Laredo’s sandy peninsula and back again. And then, after lunch, we parked in the same place and walked in the other direction until the end. The section [...]
A couple hours after posting this, I got a call from the president of the Laredo Golf Club, Pedro Garcia, who had seen this post, suggesting that I mention that the grassy and forest area you see from this web cam is exactly where they want to build a golf course. Pedro has been working tirelessly for 10 years to convince the local government that a golf course is a good idea. I welcome any opportunity to help the cause.
George Catlin painted ominous, swirling clouds of black smoke that loom out of the distance and drive the Indians before them. The artist was an eyewitness to such terrifying events, and described the fire’s “thunder rumbling as it goes.” But he also wrote that prairie fires made for “some of the most beautiful scenes that are to be witnessed in this country, and also some of the most sublime.”
This morning I did the usual, Nora, get up, go to the bathroom and put on your slippers and call me when you’re ready to come downstairs.” It’s a way to practice some autonomy and let Daddy check his email and Facebook notifications. A few minutes went by and I heard nothing. Usually this means she’s just slumped over onto her pillow again. I went up to investigate and found her fully dressed, in weather inappropriate shorts and a summer shirt over her winter undershirt, just putting on the final touches of her ensemble with a sparkly jacket. A+ for initiative!!
