Foosball Player (cropped)One thing I learned when I moved to Europe is that I really, really suck at foosball. The pub culture in Denmark, England and Spain has resulted in a very high average foosball skill level of any 20-40-year-old you find in a bar. I can probably beat the majority of ten-year-olds, but any older than that and you should bet on my opponent. This one foosball table at my in-laws social club always attracts my eye. I love the worn look of the wooden players. What better subject to play around with aperture and depth of field?

Foosball players seem like an interesting subject for other photography experiments with lighting and shadows and such.

    erik,
i believe that i’m correct that this is the (superior) french style foosball table as opposed to the german style tables that seem to more prevalent here in the US. german foosball is basically slap-ball while french tables lend themselves to people with skill to catch and kick the ball. that flick of the wrist and the ‘ting’ that the ball makes in the back of the goal is a magical one to me.
as a side point i own a rene pierre foosball table. it’s one of my prides and joy (or is that pride and joys?). it’s difficult finding parts for it, though.

Wonderful comment, Stan. Thank you! I love it when I touch ignorantly on a topic and then an aficionado comes and fills in information that I didn’t know I lacked. Next time I’m near this table, I’ll examine it for telltale signs of Frenchness.
