Bull Run Baby

July 10, 2014 By: erik Category: Offspring, Partying, Photos, Photoshop, Spain

Bull Run Baby CutoutLast Sunday we watched the annual Chupinazo event, a nationally televised event in Spain, which is very special to us. It’s the start of the San Fermín festival in Pamplona. We tried to instill some excitement about it in our children. Of course, at ages one and five, they don’t really understand what it is, but we made the minimal effort to change our clothes to the appropriate all-white outfit.

It was only after we finished our photography session that I had another idea for a photo to take.

Tilted Boats

May 05, 2013 By: erik Category: Colindres, Photos, Photoshop

Tilted BoatsToday we had some wonderful weather, and I grabbed my camera as we were leaving for our usual afternoon walk around town. In May, seven o’clock in the afternoon is well before Golden Hour, but the visibility was good and I managed to capture a few good shutter clicks. A few of them just begged to be tilt-shifted, to highlight the subject of the photo. When Photoshop beckons, I go running…

Mother Earth – Pregnancy Photoshopping

March 27, 2013 By: erik Category: Geeky, Offspring, Parenting, Photos, Photoshop, Politics

Pregnant Earth KissWhen I shared the final photo from this post a few days ago, it got much praise on the social networks. One of my friends told me that when she first saw it, she assumed – as is always possible with my photos – that it was a Photoshop fake. She said that it looked “too perfect”. I had also noticed the especially pleasing aesthetic to the photograph, but it took me a bit to put my finger on it. What is amazing about the original photograph is the perfectly spherical appearance of my wife’s belly.

Four Noras – From 6 months to 3.5 years

October 02, 2012 By: erik Category: Geeky, Offspring, Photography, Photoshop

Nora, at 2.5 and 3.5 years oldI love it when creative photography ideas come to fruition. When Nora was six months old, pretty much as soon as she could maintain a propped up sitting position in time for me to snap a photograph, I created a composite photograph of four of her sitting on our ugly green sofa. Then, a year later, I followed up with a shot of her six month old self with her eighteen month old self, which clearly left two spots on the sofa for older versions. Last year, I filled in the third spot with a 2.5 year old Nora. The time has now come (I set a calendar reminder) to continue the September tradition and add the fourth Nora to the sofa.

Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney Face Swap

January 26, 2012 By: erik Category: Photoshop, Politics, USA, Weird

Gingrich Romney Face SwapThe more I watch the media coverage of the GOP presidential primaries, the more I’m struck by just how different Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are, physically. Newt’s got a pretty spherical noggin, and Romney’s is more oblong. My photoshop nerves are itching again, so I thought I’d try a face swap, like I did with Prince William and his bride. I searched around the internet for two high resolution photographs in which they are looking more or less in the same direction and are lit from similarly positioned light sources. Ideally for this, you’d have them both in the same photograph, but they don’t pose together that much. The result of my half hour of work is pretty mediocre, but I figure I’ll share it anyway.

Elementary Fun

December 26, 2011 By: erik Category: Geeky, Musings, Photoshop, Science

NoRaThis afternoon I was succumbing to a risky vice of mine, surfing the product pages over at ThinkGeek, when I came across this t-shirt where they had used chemical symbols for elements to write a dirty word. Silly, yes, but also kind of fun as a tool to separate people who know a lot of science from those that don’t, which seems to be the primary goal of the t-shirts at ThinkGeek. For instance, I always get a chuckle out of the one that says, “There are 10 kinds of people in the world: Those who understand binary and those who don’t.” Is that kind of elitist behavior rude? Yes, but it’s a social defense mechanism, creating an “us vs. them” mentality that is ubiquitous in our species.

Newt Gingrich Morphed Into A Newt

November 29, 2011 By: erik Category: Funny, Morphing, Photoshop, Politics, USA

Newt 2012I’ve been very much enjoying the puppet show that is the GOP’s attempt to find a candidate that has any chance of defeating Obama in the 2012 presidential campaign. As the media’s interest in each candidate ebbs and flows, they are each shown to not really be a contender. The most recent fad in the race is the former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich. As I watch the news coverage, I can’t help but chuckle to myself about the possibility of having a president with the same name as a species of salamander. I figured it was time to dust off my morphing skills and actually turn him into a newt.

Father and Daughter Dancing

November 15, 2011 By: erik Category: Experiments, Geeky, Offspring, Photos, Photoshop

Dancing with NoraToday I finally got around to attempting a bit of Photoshop trickery I’ve been wanting to try, creating a photo of me dancing with my two-year-old daughter where our sizes are adjusted, either me down to her height, or her up to mine. It turns out that this is very, very hard to do well. The principal difficulty is aligning the hands, in space and with the proper angles, so that they appear to touch. Of the five or so photos I took to work with, I chose the best two to merge together. The result is a photo where the viewer is never really fooled into thinking that the two people are actually interacting physically.

Facepalm

November 03, 2011 By: erik Category: Funny, Photos, Photoshop, Weird

FacepalmRecently I noticed a minor bump on my left hand, in the center of the palm. It itched a little, but I thought little of it. But then it kept growing, almost until it looked like a little human nose. I made a doctor’s appointment and went in to see my physician. She nodded and asked, “I don’t suppose you spend a lot of time on the internet spewing sarcasm on social networking sites, do you?” Startled by her insight, I relied, “Well, maybe a little, yeah.” “And do you use puns and wordplay excessively,” she continued, “sometimes with an awkward narrative for the sole purpose of a not-that-funny punchline?” “Yep, that’s me,” I admitted. She said, “I thought so. You’ve got a textbook case of Facepalm. I’m afraid it’s going to get worse before it gets better.”

Summer’s Gone

September 19, 2011 By: erik Category: Musings, Photos, Photoshop

Lazy BenchA notable change in the weather has taken place this past week. The days of sleeping with the windows open and wearing sandals about town is coming to a close. It’s time to break out the sweaters and long trousers. There’s something about the beginning of autumn that makes me want to go outside and throw an American football around. It surprises me every year, since it’s not one of my top five favorite sports, I’ve never worn a football helmet, and I don’t have a favorite team, but there’s some deep bit of Americanism in me that I can neither control nor explain. Curious, that.
