At the risk of my dear readers thinking I’m a drunk slob, I’ll share this grape-based epiphany.
Last week, a glass that had contained some wine was left out for a few days and the remaining wine almost dried up completely. The result was this accidental work of art. (more…)

Learning a foreign language gives you a perspective on that language that the native speakers don’t have. Some phrases become so ingrained into the language, that their original, literal meaning fades. For instance, saying, “Catch you later!” when departing from someone might be a little confusing or frightening for a foreigner who didn’t understand all the intricacies of the verb “to catch”, even though the phrase is simply meant to say “goodbye”. Even the word “goodbye”, in English, French, and Spanish, no longer carries the original “go with God” meaning. And so I turn to the Spanish phrase, “si Dios quiere”.

A couple weeks ago, when visiting Juan’s (my future father-in-law’s) chickens in Mondragon, I chose, as I often do, to wait outside the little stinky structure where Juan goes to feed the animals. Instead, I waited in the other building there, where some of Juan’s friends have meals and store wine and stuff. Anyway, someone had recently cleaned out an attic and found some 40-year-old school textbooks. They were piled in a dark corner of this building. I found them quite fascinating to look through.

One of the blogs that I subscribe to is called Mother Tongue Annoyances. It’s written by a New Yorker that loves the English language and investigating its proper and improper usages. He’s moved down to Tennessee as an adult and, thus, has plenty of examples of improper usage to complain about.

I was at the gym the other day when they were having a children’s taekwondo class. As I was listening to the shouts from the little sparring five-year-olds, my mind started to wander.
