The new moon was on Christmas Eve night, so Rudolph’s nose must have been extra important this year. After seeing the pretty Moon, up high in the sky, I told myself to go and look in an hour or two to see if I could catch it approach the horizon. Normally, I would never be capable of such a thing, but I actually did remember, and I caught it just as it was touching the horizon. Unfortunately, in the time it took me to set up my tripod, the tip of the moon went behind the hill on the horizon, but I still got nine shots in the time it took to set completely.
Although I’ve consumed several kilos this year, I’m sad to see them go. The thing that most annoys me about strawberries is how long they last after I buy them. In my experience, if I don’t eat them within 48 hours, they all turn to mush and they get all fluffy with mold. This is especially a problem since I normally can’t stop myself from buying a whole 2 kilogram box of them. So I decided to turn my frustration around and use the rapid growth of mold on my strawberries as the subject of a timelapse video.

Over the course of three straight days, I left a plate of strawberries under a lamp – for consistent lighting – in the corner of my office. Unfortunately, I can’t plug my Canon 40D into the wall, so I had to keep changing the battery, which is frustratingly inaccessible when the camera is mounted on my tripod. Therefore, I had to take the camera off the tripod twice a day to change the battery, which, no matter how careful I was, resulted in the tripod shifting slightly. Luckily, most of these jolts could be rectified by my mad Adobe After Effects skills in post production. The other inconvenience was that it took 20-30 minutes to download all the photos off my memory card (I need two memory cards like I have two batteries), resulting in a slight break in my pattern of “one shot every thirty seconds” timelapse scheme.

Nevertheless, I’m quite satisfied with the outcome. One unforeseen, but obvious in retrospect, consequence was that the lamp immediately dried out the strawberries, causing them to shrink, and also provided the mold with a less than fungi-friendly environment. Oh well. Perhaps next time I’ll try using a flash like I did with the larger fungi.

For full berry-rotting excitement, it can be viewed at 1080p on YouTube or Vimeo.

Check out the moon!” It was just peeking up over the tree-lined hillside to the east of our house. I ran to get my camera and snapped several pictures during the minute I had when the natural satellite was still behind the trees. Only one of them came out very good.

The following night, I decided that, if the weather was willing, I’d be ready to photographically ambush the moon as it rose over the trees.

As anyone who has tried it will tell you, lunar photography is not easy. A moon that looks huge to the eye ends up only hitting a few pixels on your CCD. I’ve tried various hacks, but this was my first attempt with my new 200mm lens.

I should’ve written down my camera settings from the night before. Instead I just made a guess before the moon came up and it turned out that the brightness of the moon was too much to get any crater detail in my video. Oh well. I’ll have to keep at it. After all, it’s just now the start of the season when I can leave a window open for an hour at night.

My best shot from two nights ago.

Here’s my very short video with overly dramatic music:

It’s also available in 1080p HD if you roll that way.

Like the previous two years, my friend Andrés hooked us up with a lovely gourd specimen to carve. Nora had a lot of fun with the pumpkin this year. We invited over our four-year-old neighbor, Oscar (who happens to be Andrés’ nephew), to participate in the autumnal festivities. I did get Oscar to put his hand into the pumpkin and feel the slimy innards once, but after that he preferred to play with Nora’s toys, which were all new to him, and watch from afar. He brought over his own little pumpkin to carve too, so Marga got her first carving experience, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Before it was time to start carving, I did some rough sketches to choose a look for my pumpkin this year. After I drew the first one, it looked a little familiar, so I pulled up the blog entry from last year, and doggone if it wasn’t the same exact design as last year. I had to break out of my angry-two-teeth artistic phase and tread on some new ground. I ended up choosing a favorite design of my mother’s, the shifty-eyed jack-o-lantern.

I’ve been taking advantage of the good weather to get some exercise, walking up to 16 km (10 miles) around the neighboring towns. The first few days, I just walked to the beach at Laredo and walked up and down the maritime walkway several times. It occurred to me yesterday that I might have been caught on the yacht club’s webcam, but alas I was not there on the hour or 15, 30, or 45 minutes past the hour on any day. The archived panoramas I was looking through for Monday, August 18, were so pretty that I decided to make a timelapse video out of them.

Unfortunately I only had 4 frames per hour to work with. After trying various frame rates, I settled on 10 frames per second in order to get some effect of movement – anything slower looked more like a slideshow. It would be amazing to have a shot every minute from that perch over the beach.

Because the images are from a 360° panorama, I cut between four shots of different parts of the panorama. It goes by really quickly, so you might want to watch it a couple times. Things to watch for:

In the first shot, the tide comes in, goes out, and comes back in again.

In the second shot, for some reason, all the boats turn around from facing left to facing right. Wind? Tides?

In the third shot, the parking lot fills up quickly in the morning and empties quickly in the evening.

Very worth watching in HD.

As soon as I learned that my friend and grocery store manager, Andrés, cultivates mushrooms, I knew immediately that we had to do a timelapse photography project with his next batch. The particular species he cultivates is Pleurotus ostreatus, the oyster mushroom. He buys preprepared bails of hay wrapped in plastic, to which nutrients, mushroom spores, and water have been added. Holes have been cut in the plastic on the top and sides of the bail. Before you can see any mushroom growth, the whole bail gets warm to the touch, as the nutrient consumption begins inside. When the little fungal sprigs started appearing in the holes, Andrés came to me, with a big grin on his face, and said, “Today’s the day!” So I returned that afternoon and set up the tripod, flash, and intervalometer pointing at the bails of hay in his grocery store’s warehouse right down the street from where I live. And then we waited…

Unfortunately, I don’t have any way to plug my camera or flash into a wall outlet, so I had to go twice a day with my laptop and a spare charged camera battery to download all the photos from the memory card and replace the camera’s battery, a process which required removing the camera from the tripod. Even though I was careful not to move the tripod, every time I changed the battery, either the tripod moved or the level of zoom changed slightly. Thus I was unable to get one long take of the mushrooms growing. I will have to investigate alternate power sources, and perhaps pull the photos out using the USB cable instead of removing the memory card.

The entire process took about 72 hours. After the first batch of mushrooms have been harvested, more will continue grow. Each bail of hay providing four or five harvests. And even then it’s better if you spread the hay in a dank dark corner of your garden, because they will keep growing and growing and growing.

Fresh Oyster Mushroom Recipe

Because these mushrooms were freshly harvested from a clean environment when I cooked them, they didn’t need to be washed at all. In fact, Andrés specifically told me not to wash them because they will absorb the water and then release it into the frying pan later, losing taste as they do. This species of mushroom is fairly common in supermarkets around Spain – they call them setas, which is is a term that encompasses most types of edible mushrooms – but the time between being harvested and the time spent in a refrigerator means they lose a lot of flavor. These were fresh and very flavorful.

Cut the mushrooms at their base with a pair of scissors

Optionally wipe them off a little bit with a napkin. Do not wash them!

Do not cut off their stems. Since they are fresh, the stems are tender and edible.

Sprinkle on a little bit of salt

Sauté them in a little extra virgin olive oil.

Serve.

Some people add a little garlic, but these fresh mushrooms are so flavorful that extra spices are not really necessary. Taste the fungus!!

Timelapse Video

By a coincidence involving the date your great-grandparents chose to get married, we spent your first birthday in the United States. You showed your shiny new blue passport and grinned as the immigration official took your mother’s fingerprints and mugshot. Mommy only has a red passport. You did better than I expected on the transatlantic hop, preferring your mother’s lap to mine, thus allowing me to watch a few movies. They didn’t have a microwave on the plane, just an oven, so when the flight attendant tried to heat your vegetable puree lunch in a bowl, she only managed to heat the bowl. On the ninety minute third leg of the journey, we were exhausted, and you spent sixty of the ninety minutes crying as loudly as you could. I experienced this in surround sound, because you were to the left of me and a six-month-old (who was freakishly born with two teeth) was on my right failing to harmonize with you. We did not know until our seats were already chosen for the pond hop that it’s possible to request a bassinet on the long flights. We did so on the way back and it made a HUGE difference not to have you sitting on our laps the whole time.

The trip was quite stressful for you, being flung into a foreign land with dozens of people so excited to meet you. As a result, you clung very tightly to your mother for pretty much the entire fortnight. Your grandparents babysat you for two nights and you behaved fairly well for them. Your canine uncles (my parents’ dogs) were a new experience for you. Uncle Buster sussed out early that you weren’t a threat to his food and pretty much ignored you. Ever the social outcast, Uncle Blue may never have seen such a small human before and was terrified of you. Your favorite uncle was by far Uncle Sam, a ten year old West Highland Scottish Terrier.

Uncle Sam wants YOU!

You really liked the Johnny Jump Up that your grandmother bought you from the baby consignment shop especially for this visit. You are right in the target demographic of mobility and strength. And your fascination for telephones went unabated throughout the visit. With your grandparents’ phone, pressing the two biggest buttons resulted in first acquiring a dial tone and then forwarding the dial tone to the other phones of the house, causing them all to ring.

You seem to look guilty a lot lately, too.

This trip saw your first introduction to something American children have been eating and throwing on the floor for generations: Cheerios. Of course you loved them. Since Spaniards aren’t big cereal eaters, I think I’ve only ever seen flakes in the grocery store, but I will have to keep an eye out for whole-grain tori.

You also discovered the food storage facility located below your mouth. I still use mine sometimes.

Your grandfather is a pinball wizard. He discovered that pinball can console you in ways that no amount of rocking or cooing can. What’s not to like about a shiny ball bouncing around flashing lights and flippers flipping.

On your birthday, we opened two bottles of Nora, a gift from friends Jeff and Jane, in your honor. If only we’d known about it when we took our trip to Vigo last month…we passed right by the vineyard with the most beautiful name.

The weather was wonderful, so we spent the first part of the party out on the deck.

On the Friday before we left from Spain, you and I went to the local grocery store, Susinos, like we always do. They are very fond of you in there. While we were discussing our upcoming trip with your friends there, my friend, Andrés (of politically scandalous fame), came over and said he had a gift for us. He pulled out a bottle of wine inside a plastic bag and said that it was to be taken to your grandparents and opened on your birthday. When I pulled off the plastic bag, I was amazed to discover that he had taken this photograph and painstakingly cut out the background and replaced it with the US and Spanish flags. The amount of work he had put into it out of pure thoughtfulness was amazing. It’s no wonder we go almost exclusively to his store.

My parents loved the gesture as well.

Andrés, even though he mispronounced your name a little, I think you will agree that his gracias is sincere.

As is tradition in the United States, we gave you a piece of cake and let you eat it as you saw fit. I also recorded a video of you eating it, which I will present here. As a result of most of the attendees to your birthday party being baby boomers your grandparents’ age and the fair amount of wine consumed during the meal, while you were eating your cake they spontaneously broke into the 1963 billboard hit, It’s My Party. Thankfully the video camera was still rolling so your reaction to a song about sixties teen angst has been recorded for posterity. Priceless.

After dinner, your parents and grandparents performed a dress rehearsal of some original songs that would later be performed at the Rasmussen Family Reunion later in the week, including the tongue-in-cheek soon-to-be-classic, If My Family’s All Crazy, Why Am I Sane, sung to the tune of I Saw The Light.

You didn’t know your family was so musical, did you?

Then came the presents…

You seemed very fond of this doll.

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, a tongue twisting classic.

And of course more books. You love turning pages.

Your grandmother gave you this beautiful alphabet quilt that she bartered some work for.

It’s embroidered with your name and birth date.

Eventually the guests had to leave and you came down off your chocolate high and went to bed. It has been one of the most amazing years of my life as I have learned to care for and love you in ways I never understood before. We’ve both changed a lot since I snipped that umbilical cord on the Tuesday afternoon of March 24, 2009. I look forward to spending many more years with you.

After Apple’s dumbing down of iMovie (Apple dumbed something down? Imagine that!) last year, it’s refreshing to get back to editing videos with an actual timeline and keyframes.

Our little primate specimen decided that everyone should be up and active at 7:30 AM every day this week, so I’ve seen every sunrise so far. Monday’s was beautiful, but I just enjoyed it without recording it. On Tuesday, I actually got out the camera and recorded the area of the horizon where the sun appears. And on Wednesday and today the sky was gray and boring for the sunrise.

What’s interesting is that I recorded two sets of five-seconds-apart shots, stopping the intervalometer for about 45 minutes when the sky turned gray. What’s cool is that I was able to blend between the earlier footage and the later footage in an almost unnoticeable way.

Some of the features of this video that I did not know how to do until I created it:

Text that follows a curved path

Animated text that disappears when it leaves a feathered mask area

Creating a timelapse solely in After Effects (It’s as hard as dragging in a folder containing the jpegs.)

Panning and zooming within a timelapse video

A seamless blend between two shots

Adding a soundtrack in After Effects

The video is frustratingly short at about 12 seconds, but it was just for practice, as I said. It could be the start of a cool video, though. Here it is in 1080p if you have some bandwidth to kill and a hankering for high quality.

Oddly enough, it was a Viagra commercial I saw the other day that played a candle burning in reverse (obvious imagery) that made me finally decide to do it. I used some birthday candles that we’ve been using for Nora’s birthday parties, which, by chance, are “sparkler” candles that not only relight themselves when extinguished, but also send off sparks every so often. The camera was set to take a photograph every three seconds, so the majority of the sparks were missed, but several of them where captured. What surprised me about them was the obvious rotation of the burning projectiles, resulting in squiggly lines of fire in the photographs. Behold!

It’s unclear to me how the spark on the right changed direction in mid-flight.

More corkscrew sparks.

I suppose that most sparks have angular momentum like this and spiral around as they burn.

I’m a bit of a NASA TV addict. I particularly love watching live shuttle launches and ISS docking maneuvers. The fact that we can launch ourselves up out of our atmosphere and rendezvous with a space station moving at 7.7 kilometers per second 340 km above the Earth blows my mind every single time. Yesterday, as I was watching STS-129 approach the ISS, I had to pause the video to do something else, and when I moved the Quicktime slider back up to the live feed, I noticed how much cooler it all looked at accelerated speed. So I saved the feed I’d been watching, sped it up twelve times, and put some music to it.

While I admit that the music selection is hardly original, I think you have to admit that it is absolutely perfect.
