Wilson and The Claw!

March 18, 2008 By: erik Category: Colindres, Funny, Photos

Marga and I took a walk down by the Colindres docks the other day. When we returned home, we had some pretty humorous photos captured on the camera. First, a little background…

Since learning it, bollard has become my favorite word. I find it’s faux-vulgarity pretty funny.

By far, my favorite scenes from the Toy Story movies were the ones involving the little green creatures and The Claw, the sky deity they worship and who chooses them to be taken to the afterlife. YouTube link.

Okay, now you’re prepared. Take a moment to guess the contents of photos that follow.

Palm Sunday Stroll

March 17, 2008 By: erik Category: Colindres, Photos, Spain

Spring is here!I took a walk with my camera this morning. It was a beautiful warm, but windy, day. During my walk, the church let out a full congregation, each person carrying a little twig. From what I can tell from Wikipedia, the significance of the palm on this day has to do with palm fronds being the 33. A.D. equivalent of a Hollywood red carpet, being laid for Jesus to walk on as he entered Jerusalem. Despite having tons of palm trees around, the congregation in Colindres clearly had some other species of recently felled plant.

Friends I've Never Met

One year ago, today, some guy I had never met in Slovenia, who you all know as sgazzetti, left a comment on my blog. It was informative, funny, and knocked me down off my high horse, three qualities that I still admire in him, and in all friends generally. I checked out his blog, and found the most recent posts to be entertaining, so I subscribed to his RSS feed. Over the next few weeks, he left more comments at my blog, and I left some at his. It was so strange to me that, A) someone I’d never met would be interested enough in my ramblings to visit my blog every couple days, and B) that I might do the same for someone I’d never met. I’d never gotten to know someone via blogging before.

Fiery Ferraro Fiasco

March 14, 2008 By: erik Category: Media, Politics, USA

I’m way late to the game on bringing this topic to the blogosphere, but I wanted to post a few comments on this, now infamous, comment made by Geraldine Ferraro, the gist of which was, “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position [as a Democratic nominee front runner].” The first I heard of this was through Keith Olbermann’s Special Comment, in which he was convincingly harsh on both Ferraro and Clinton.

Wedding Ring or Disco Ball?It took longer than I expected for my wedding ring to become a part of my body. I was expecting to not regularly notice its existence by Christmas, but it still felt odd as we entered the new year. Today is my five month anniversary, and I can definitely say that I no longer notice my ring on a regular basis, and it feels very odd when I take it off. It really only gets taken off when I go to the gym, because it hurts to use the weight machines with it on.

It does, however, get played with sometimes as I sit at my desk. The particular design we chose has many flat surfaces that make it appear shinier, or more sparkly, than if it were smooth. It scatters sunlight in a nice way, forming an arc of little dots on whatever surface it’s near. The other day, I was admiring the sparkliness and thought I’d get out my camera to see if I could capture some of it for your viewing pleasure. I’m sure there’s a metaphor here about marriage being multifaceted.

Philadelphia Salad

Salad Cream CheeseI thought I’d write about my new favorite salad topping: cream cheese. My wife found it in the supermarket while buying cream cheese for her cheesecake. When we ran out, I tried with some regular spreadable cream cheese, and it didn’t work quite as well as the packaged block for salads, but it might have been that the spreadable was “light”. It still works, and you should try it even if you can’t find the specially packaged “salad cream cheese”.

At first, we weren’t sure we liked it, but by about the second or third time we had a salad with these cream cheese cubes, we loved it!

In Plain English

I’ve just discovered this In Plain English series of videos. They do a really good job of explaining things that I have tried explaining, like What’s the point of Twitter? and What’s the point of Facebook? The Twitter video is right on. Check these out.

I’ve had a slight cold all week, sniffling and nose-blowing every couple minutes all day long. Just as the horrible weather we’ve had lately reminds me to appreciate good weather more, being sick helps me to appreciate how nice it is to be well. I tell myself that, psychologically, these valleys are absolutely essential to not taking the peaks for granted.

Yesterday, without even realizing that I was collecting them, I found the following sight on my desk. (more…)
