Grandma with Turkey (crop)This year, I finally got to show Marga one of my favorite American traditions: Thanksgiving dinner. As long as I live, “a proper Thanksgiving” in my mind will be those of my childhood at my grandparents’ house, my grandmother’s turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, peas, cranberry jello, and pumpkin pie with real whipped cream. This was my first Thanksgiving with my family since 2001. Rose-colored memories of The Good Old Days are hard to live up to, but my amazing grandmother did it. The only thing missing from the dinner table was my grandfather, who died three years ago. His absence was felt.

I sneak a peak at the pie that awaits us after dinner.

Grandma with scarf

My grandmother receives a scarf as a present from Marga’s parents. She loves it.

Looking good.

My father loves this time of year, too, I think.

Pumpkin Pie with Whipped Cream

Delicious!

Marga happy with her slice of pumpkin pie

Marga could get used to this holiday, I think.

Pictionary

After dinner, we played some Pictionary. On a previous visit, we discovered that Marga has some amazing Pictionary skills as a drawer. Being a good Pictionary drawer is not only about being able to sketch figures and shapes, but figuring out how to graphically represent words and concepts. For example, drawing a stick man and a stick woman together won’t elicit the word “marriage” or “wedding” until you draw the crucifix above them.

We had a wonderful visit. Thank you very much, Grandma. You’re amazing.

  • Nice. Except for the Jello salad. I cannot get behind Jello salad, or, as it is often called by my southern homies, congealed salad.

  • Shredded oranges, cranberry preserves, canned-mandarine-sections, , diced apples, raisins, sunflower seeds, crushed walnuts and almonds, in a very stiff cherry jello = The type of “jello salad” I do like. Especially when it’s really packed, and topped with well-strained cottage cheese and pineapple. (Have to leave the pineapple out – says Granma, it makes it all fall apart.)
*makes trip to HiperCor & spends more on one salad than a weeks worth of food*

I finally got around to posting a time-lapse video on Flickr of “surface currents.”

    Erik:

I am coming to Barcelona after Xmas with my Spanish speaking girlfriend. Do you have any advice for things to see and do in Barcelona? Any advice for a 60 year old who might want to change his life at this late stage and work in Europe? I used to own a franchised sign and graphics company, but sold it recently and am at a crossroads in my life trying to decide what to do next.

  • Sorry, Norm. I’ve only been to Barcelona once and it was to do all the usual tourist stuff. If your Spanish-speaking girlfriend is Spanish, then finding work and/or starting another business in Spain will be a lot easier for you if you marry her. Maybe you could start a B&B and target English speakers visiting Spain? That’s a pretty big market. Finding work and getting residency in Spain might be worth it if only for the free medicine. It’s a good choice of a country to grow old in for that reason.

    Buena suerte, Norm!

I so love Pictionary, but have been known to make vague connections in past games. Once I drew a picture of a camera for the word “cannon”. I also begin guessing the moment the pencil hits paper and managed to win one round in a matter of seconds by guessing the word “veil”.

  • Nice articles you have written. Keep going on. Good work…!!
