Pumpkin Carving 2009

October 30, 2009 By: erik Category: Art, Offspring, Photos, Scary, USA

Carved Pumpkin 2009After eleventh hour gourd procurement last year, this year my local grocer friend, Andrés, who regularly visits farmers markets to buy fruit and vegetables, had his eye out for the perfect pumpkin for me to carve. And sure enough, he came through with the perfectly shaped pumpkin. Last night I carved it into a jack-o-lantern.

Morphing Nora Into An Adult

Aged NoraThis is quite possibly the creepiest blog post I’ve ever posted, at least on a personal level. I’ve always known I would do this, and my regular readers might share in my surprise that it’s taken me so long to do it. Yesterday, in a curiosity-fueled effort to speculate on what Nora might look like as an adult, I morphed my face with my wife’s. Morphing is always creepy, and even more so when it is done with faces that you know very well.

The John Williams Effect

October 29, 2009 By: erik Category: Music, Offspring, Parenting, Videos, Weird

thumbIt’s weird, the songs we sing to our children. When a song is needed to get a baby through a stressful time or maneuver, the parent often doesn’t have time to specifically choose a song for the occasion, the brain is just told to sing, and sing it does.

Recently my brain and I been going through a John Williams phase. I love John Williams’ music. If Beethoven or Bach or the Strauss boys were alive today they’d be scoring movies, too. Different songs come out of me at different times depending on the current parenting operation. When I have to flip her onto her stomach as part of a donning or doffing, the Superman theme comes out as she naturally resembles a flying prone human.

Colorful Sweater

Rainbow HoodSome time ago Nora’s great-grandfather bought her an adorable little sweater. I particularly like these, and I stop to look at all the creative designs when I see the booth of these sweaters at the local Friday market. On the one hand it’s super-cute, but on the other hand it looks like what would happen if you combine knitting with lysergic acid diethylamide. In a surprising discovery that shocked all of us, it turns out that Nora is infinitesimally closer to the asymptote of perfect adorableness in this sweater. The two days she’s worn it, I could do nothing but smile at her.

Top Ten WordPress Plugins I Can't Live Without

October 27, 2009 By: erik Category: Geeky, Internet, Wordpress

Recently I’ve been recommending some wordpress plugins to people, and I find myself repeating the same reasons and explanations, so I thought I would write them down here so I can just point people to one place. Ironically, I can totally live without all of the plugins that I took the time to write: Flickr Flash Badge Widget, Revver WordPress Plugin, Widgetize Anything, and YT-Audio: Audio Hosting From YouTube.

I’ve ordered them from least important to most impressive and important, just like top ten lists are supposed to be.

Hanging Out With Nora

October 26, 2009 By: erik Category: Offspring, Videos

thumbBabies spend an awful lot of time doing very little. Or at least it looks like they’re not doing anything, but in reality their constantly learning about their environment and the way the natural world functions. Sometimes I spend time just watching Nora look around at stuff. This video will probably be boring for most people, but it’s the kind of video I wish I had of myself at Nora’s age, just being a curious baby.

Two Nieces

October 25, 2009 By: erik Category: Experiments, Family, Photos, Photoshop, Weird

Two NiecesMy sister-in-law has been begging me to make this photoshop construction for a long time. Finally on Saturday I took the pictures, and today I spent a disturbingly small amount of time (< 5 minutes) photoshopping two photos together.

One interesting thing that I discovered in this endeavor was that it’s really hard to move a 7 kg weight from one side of your body to the other without drastically changing your posture. On the photos with Nora on her right, her hips were exaggeratedly to her left, and vice versa.

Seven Months Old

Seven Month Birthday Party (crop)Well, it’s not like we can stop now! Yesterday we had a party for Nora’s seven month birthday. Her aunt, Spanish grandmother, and great-grandfather were in attendance. Hamburgers were on the menu again, and we had a wonderful feast. I’m always too hungry to take a photo of the actual hamburgers, though.

Nora had a great time.

Almost Published

Two weeks ago, I was contacted by someone claiming to be a contributing editor to a book that is about to be published, asking if I would accept money in exchange for permission to republish a blog post of mine in their book that may or may not sell millions of copies in over thirty languages. Here’s the email I received (hyperlinking mine):

Bordeaux Reflections

Kid playing Bordeaux reflection poolThere is really only one obligatory photograph that must be taken when you visit Bordeaux, the one on the covers of all the tourism guides. It’s of the Place de la Bourse taken from the other side of the reflection pool. They have a large, maybe 20m x 40m reflection pool between the Place de la Bourse and the river that is maintained with about a centimeter of water. It’s pure high-grade photographer catnip.
