My Local Machine Gun Store in Spain

December 17, 2015 By: erik Category: Scary, Spain, USA

Gun storeToday, after I dropped my daughter off at her French class, I went for a little walk. As I was strolling down the street, I walked by this shop. Perhaps, had I not been an American, I might not have stopped dead in my tracks, but I did. I evaluated the “Armament” flag in the window and began wondering if I hadn’t stumbled on the local ISIS Я Us recruitment center.

Drone Terrorism: Coming to Skies Near You!

December 23, 2014 By: erik Category: Musings, Scary, USA

QuadcopterUnmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology is advancing incredibly rapidly. For several years now, I’ve been a fan of the Team BlackSheep YouTube channel, which regularly displays seriously impressive videos from the point of view of their drones, zooming around places that no manned aircraft could do. It’s about as close to a first person perspective from Peter Pan or Superman that we all imagine as you can find on the internet.

Spanish Ham Mites: Entomology and Jamón Ibérico

December 05, 2014 By: erik Category: Food, Scary, Science, Spain

Yesterday, with the entire family – the children were forbidden for solstice myth reasons – digging around in our storage room to find the missing Christmas tree legs, we ended up finding another leg that we’d bought this past summer, a leg of Iberian Ham, or jamón ibérico. We sliced off a few slices for dinner last night.

This morning, I glanced at the ham and noticed some little white dots on the open meat. Upon closer inspection, I realized that they were moving. Ugh.

Trust and Passwords on the Social Web

December 02, 2014 By: erik Category: Geeky, Internet, Scary

Trust FallAs part of a sermon about being vulnerable, one of my Facebook friends, who is a religious leader of some capacity, has decided to give out his Facebook password… live on the radio. Of course this is strictly prohibited by Facebook’s Terms of Service, which states:

4.8) You will not share your password (or in the case of developers, your secret key), let anyone else access your account, or do anything else that might jeopardize the security of your account.

Clearly this is intended as a hip new version of that old team-building exercise of letting yourself fall backwards and be caught by a group of your peers. It’s also an expression of trust of the community and of Humanity in general, like leaving your house unlocked.

The Great Quadriceps Contusion of 2014

July 28, 2014 By: erik Category: Complaining, Photos, Scary

Dead Leg BruiseThe fateful day was Monday, July 7, 2014. The time was 13:00h. My daughter and I had just taken my son to daycare, and were going to the local grocer to buy bread and lunch supplies for the day. The day before, when I had gone to the grocery store, it had suddenly begun to rain while I was doing my shopping, and I was without an umbrella. Because they are just such nice people, and our daily relationship is so good, my grocer friend, Andrés, lent me an umbrella to take home for the day. So on that fateful day, I had returned it. As I was leaving the store, I turned around to catch Andrés’ attention to make sure he noticed that I had returned the communal umbrella to its spot. He acknowledged it, and I turned to continue walking, with the shopping bag in one hand, and my daughter’s hand in the other. That’s when it happened.

Do NOT pay more than $14 for your ESTA Application!

Department of Homeland SecurityIn preparation for our upcoming trip to the United States, I was double checking that everything is in order. After last year’s ESTA debacle, I want to be 100% sure we have my wife’s immigration approval number before leaving for the airport. So I did an internet search for ESTA to search for her approval number. What I found is a system of websites designed to scam unknowing foreign travelers out of their money.

Neighborhood Kings Day Fire

January 06, 2012 By: erik Category: Colindres, News, Photos, Scary

Fire in Colindres - Incendio en ColindresOn Kings Day, my family woke up excited to see what presents the Magi had brought us. We looked out our sixth story window and saw fog. But there was something strange about the fog; it was moving very quickly and…billowing. Smoke! One of the old houses that our bedroom window overlooks was billowing white smoke, and a fireman was perched on a cherry picker spraying water down into the interior of the house. It’s three hours later as I write this and they are still spraying even more water and more smoke is billowing out. I took some photos.

My Eye

November 11, 2011 By: erik Category: Experiments, Photos, Scary, Videos

Erik EyeToday I discovered a macro feature of my video camera lens that I had forgotten existed. The first thing I did was pick up a one dollar bill that I have on my desk for some reason and examine POTUS1’s face. Impressed, I decided I needed to record a video of something very close up. Not having an ant farm or a pet praying mantis, I decided the best subject for my first macro video should be my gorgeous greenish-yellow eyes. It took a couple attempts to figure out how to best, without too much effort, keep the camera and my head from moving around too much. I ended up sitting on the floor with the camera resting on my desk. Clearly, this level of intimacy required some creepy background music, so I found some.

Dog Bite

June 28, 2011 By: erik Category: Family, Offspring, Photos, Scary, USA

Curled upMy parents have three dogs: Buster, Sam and Blue. I learned almost a decade ago that Buster was the most likely to actually bite someone when I got a little too rough playing with him and I got a tooth to the bridge of my nose. It didn’t break the skin, but it was sufficiently scary to give me a sense of cautious respect when dealing with Buster. We knew from our very first visit with Nora that Buster should never really be in the same room with Nora. Buster is the alpha dog of the house and is pretty much completely deaf, as old springers often are.

WatchLiveFootball.tv is a scam

May 05, 2010 By: erik Category: Complaining, Internet, Reviews, Scary, Soccer

WatchLiveFootball.tv is a scamRecently there was a soccer match that I wanted to watch, but that was not broadcast on my basic cable television. Investigating around the internet for a site that would stream the live game, I stumbled upon a very well designed website called watchlivefootball.tv. If you go there, you will see a nice listing of today’s fixtures with the time the match starts, the players, past results for each team, and the logos for each team as well as the league or tournament the game belongs to. It looks very professional. On each match page, there is a video player. When you click play, you are presented with this:
