Ian is Four!

Four years oldMy youngest little baby turned four years old today. It’s hard to believe that only four years ago our family was incomplete. It feels like there have been four of us since forever. Even though it’s a Tuesday night, we invited over Ian’s best friend, Gael, and his other friend, Mara, who has an older sister who is Nora’s best friend at school. Nora’s best neighborhood friend, Carmen, also came to our little soirée. Carmen is exactly six years older than Ian, so she also got to blow some candles.

Nora’s Seventh Birthday Party

March 19, 2016 By: erik Category: Offspring, Partying, Photos, Videos

Nora's Seventh Birthday PartyToday we had a birthday party for Nora’s seventh birthday. She has been going to classmates’ birthday parties for a couple of years now, but this is the first one that she has thrown. She filled out little invitation cards with the date and her mother’s mobile phone number and gave them out to her classmates and her best friend three floors down. As a result, she is the only living human who knows her mother’s new phone number by memory; the number recently changed, and I have not memorised it yet, and her mother never learned her previous number of nine years.

Ian Is Two!

Ian's 2nd BirthdayIan turned two years old yesterday. It’s hard to believe in both ways, that it seems so long ago that he was born, and yet it seems like yesterday. It’s so nice to celebrate the completion of our family. His mother, unfortunately, had to work in the morning. We had a lovely celebration with his Spanish grandparents and aunt. As one might expect, he didn’t really have any clue as to the significance of the day, but he had a grand old time.

Nora is Six!

March 24, 2015 By: erik Category: News, Offspring, Partying, Photos, Videos

Birthday girlToday is Nora’s sixth birthday. She claims it’s the best birthday of her entire life. The past few days, she’s been asking if we have all her presents bought. A few of them did get purchased the day before, I will admit. Yesterday, she begged me to at least tell her “What are the dibujos on the gifts?” At first I thought she meant dibujos as “drawings”, like on the wrapping paper, but eventually I figured out that she meant what “cartoons” the gifts were branded with. Ah, the preoccupations of a near-six-year-old… Just to razz her, I told her that most of them with Spiderman™, which she hates with burning prejudice simply because the boys in her class like it, and therefore it must be terrible.

Birthday Brunch at King Street Café

October 20, 2014 By: erik Category: Food, Travel, USA

King Street CaféOn my 36th birthday, I had my first brunch. Brunch, you see, is a logical impossibility in Spain, due to the extreme sacred importance of the “midday” (2pm – 3pm) meal. Combining it with another meal has never once occurred to a Spaniard. While Spaniards do have a meal similar to a brunch, called almuerzo, lunch is still eaten afterwards.

I’ve heard talk of this restaurant in my hometown, called the King Street Café, and I was delighted to hear that my parents had scheduled it into our visit with my cousins and grandmother.

Birthday Presents – Joy and Sadness

May 04, 2014 By: erik Category: Offspring, Videos

Yesterday, the prodigal son and daughter returned. There was much rejoicing. Ian finally got to open his birthday presents. He got a set of three pretty awesome – in my biased opinion – soft cars from his parents and some clothes and a little “pound the pegs” toy from my parents. Well, let’s just say that one of the presents really “hit” home. One year old boys love pounding on stuff. First we let his sister tap all the pegs down as Ian watched, with his envy visibly building to the bursting point, and then we turned it over to him. I missed his first pounding session with the camera, but I caught the second on “film”.

Ian’s First Birthday

April 25, 2014 By: erik Category: Parenting, Photos, Videos

Exactly one year ago this morning, I met and immediately fell in love with my little man, Ian. I remember that all I could say through my tears that morning was how perfect he was. It has been really fun to watch him grow from such a helpless bundle of need to a little boy who can walk several steps independently in only the time it takes the Earth to go around the sun.

Ian is Two Months Old

June 25, 2013 By: erik Category: Food, Offspring, Partying, Photos

Ian is Two Months OldIan has turned two months old today. He’s quite a bit bigger, and seems slightly more aware of his surroundings. He’s quite a demanding lad, always preferring to be held, and not just “sitting on the sofa with a baby in your arms” held, either; his holder must be pacing around the room to satisfy him. He also enjoys being pushed in the pram, but no matter how peacefully he appears to be sleeping, if you stop for a moment, he’ll wake up and complain. When I’m out for a walk with him, I’m often reminded of that bus in Speed.

Nora Is Four!

March 25, 2013 By: erik Category: Family, Offspring, Partying, Photos

Nora's Fourth BirthdayFor five weeks, we tracked every day on a calendar to know when it would be Nora’s birthday. Also on the calendar was the arrival of my parents for their fortnight Easter visit. Nora was pretty excited about turning four, although she didn’t really comprehend that she would be receiving presents. Even on the day, I had to remind her that it was time to open presents. Her Spanish grandparents and aunt came to visit for her birthday, so she had all her most immediate blood relatives with her.

Nora Is Three!

March 26, 2012 By: erik Category: News, Offspring, Partying, Photos, Spain

Taking pictures with new digital cameraNora turned three years old this weekend. We drove to her Spanish grandparents’ house in Mondragón and had a party at their Centro Extremeño, a cultural center and social club for emigrants from the Extremadura province of southern Spain. Nora was quite wowed by all the presents and attention. She gets a lot of presents and attention throughout the year, but this was definitely a more special day. She got many dresses, and a doll, a wooden bowling set, and a Hello Kittyâ„¢ digital camera, which is iPhone-shaped, so she calls it her “mobile”. The digital camera was her favorite gift, which I’m proud to say came from her loving parents (it was marked down from 70€ to 20€!!), but her second favorite gift, the bowling kit, was more fun to play with in the wide open space of the cultural center.
