Mitten Puppets

Nora with Mitten PuppetsMy grandmother, Joyce, knitted some mitten puppets for her great-granddaughter, Nora, for Christmas 2011. As often happens with presents not made in Chinese plastic molds, they got a little passed over on Christmas morning, but we’ve found them and the weather has finally gotten cold enough to necessitate insulating hand gear, so we put them on her yesterday. It turns out to be extremely difficult to actually get her thumb and pinky into their requisite holes, but she does enjoy the faces on them.

Nora’s Second Birthday Card

Nora's Second Birthday CardI’ve mentioned before how amazingly talented my grandmother is at making greeting cards. For Nora’s second birthday, my grandmother not only made a beautiful card, but also totally nailed Nora’s ability level for following a story, and made the surprise at the end a photo of the person Nora most likes to look at: herself. The card itself, was the most fun Nora had opening her birthday presents. Luckily I caught some of the magic on film.

Cards by Joyce

Marga's Birthday CardMy grandmother, Joyce Rasmussen, has always been interested in arts and crafts. She has made baskets, pottery, needlework, crochet, knitting, paper-mí¢ché, and origami. What she’s really been excelling at recently is making elaborate homemade greeting cards. Ever since getting a personal computer back in the late eighties, she has been fond of printing her own greeting cards, which involves choosing appropriate clipart and writing a nice message. I have always appreciated her cards more because I know that the sentiment comes directly from her, not Hallmark™.

At some point the idea occurred to her that if she cut a perfect circle of just the right radius in the front of the card with an X-Acto knife, then one of her origami chrysanthemums would fit there perfectly and be both held tightly in place and completely cover the hole. This discovery ushered in a Renaissance in Joyce-made greeting cards.

Happy Birthday, Great-Grandma!

Happy Birthday, Great-Grandma!Nora’s only remaining great-grandmother (my paternal grandmother), Joyce, turns [REDACTED]-years-old today. It was very special for us that she travelled to visit us soon after Nora was born. And Nora returned the favor a year later and stayed a few days in her house last March, when we had a family reunion in which all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren showered her with love and affection. If we can raise Nora to be half as kind, classy, and caring as her great-grandmother, we’ll have made the world a better place.
