My father turned 58 on Saturday. Here’s a little Flickr tribute to him.

He cooked a paella like the one below for his birthday.

Paella Paul

Paella Paul – Excited to learn about the culture of his son’s girlfriend, Paul teaches himself to make the most traditional Spanish dish, the paella.

Canal Boat Captain

Canal Boat Captain – Captain Paul sits calmly with a martini while his crew pulls the long boat into the lock in Stratfordshire, England, in October, 2004.

Whiskey For Dad

Whiskey For Dad – Erik gives his father a bottle of 15-year-old Glenlivet single malt scotch in February, 2006.

Have a good year, Pops!

Thanks for the pictorial reminder of three fine times. My birthday Paella was the prettiest yet, complete with artistic use of the lobsters’ shells, and mussels instead of clams. Too bad my camera’s battery had no power.

  • Can you explain exactly what your look signifies in the picture where you are handing your dad the scotch? I can come up with a few guesses, but they probably aren’t along the lines of what you are really thinking.

  • Alan: That gift was given the night before my father, the organizer of the golf tournament I play in most Februaries, decided on the handicaps for the tournament. There’s a running joke that gifts from any participants are welcome right up to the handicap assignments are posted.

Hence the exaggerated, “You owe me for this!” look on my face. 🙂

  • Thanks.

    And Yep… I was way off. 🙂

That was a fine present, worth at least two strokes. Just for the record, the 18 year old Glenlivet is valued at three strokes. Please don’t characterize this important part of the tournament as a “running joke”, however, or it will surely cost you a stroke.
