Erik and Nora (Father and Daughter)Recently I asked, just out of curiosity, my parents to scan and send some infant pictures of me. The results were astounding. Marga’s family and I looked at the photos and immediately said, “That’s Nora!” Also, Marga, who knows me best, says that she often recognizes gestures that Nora makes as being identical to mine. Apparently Nora and I spend a lot of time touching our faces.

The other day, while watching a fíºtbol match on television, with Nora in my arms, I was resting my elbow on the armrest and my chin on my closed fist. I glanced down to check on Nora and saw that she, in her sleep, was making the exact same fist-to-chin gesture. It’s like looking into a time mirror sometimes.

She’s way better looking than I am, that’s for sure. The originals of these two photographs are here and here.

  • Isn’t it great! I think this is one of the best things about parenthood. I love when Josh or Nate make an expression that I know is something similar to one I make.

It’s even better when they are at Nora’s age, because you know it’s less of an environmental thing than a genetic thing.

  • The other thing that happens is that I know her expressions so well, and sometimes, especially when I’m drifting off to sleep, I find myself making a similar face or stretching the way she does. The unconscious mimicry goes both ways.

I’m quite certain that her gestural similarity to me is not at all environmental, since she doesn’t seem to interact with her environment much at all yet. She’ll prefer a human face over a wall when choosing where to direct her blank stare, but that’s about it.

  • that is incredible!
